Exceptions to the Requirement to Provide Nutrition Information
According to Regulation (EU) No. 1169/2011 on the provision of food information to consumers There are exceptions where it is not mandatory to include nutrition information on food packaging. These exceptions are listed in Annex V to the Regulation and applies throughout the European Union—for example, in the Czech Republic, Slovenia, and Croatia.
Exceptions—Foods Not Subject to Nutrition Labeling Requirements:
- Unprocessed products, which consist of a single ingredient or category of ingredients (e.g., fresh fruit, vegetables, or certain types of fresh meat).
- Processed products for which the only processing step was aging, and which consist of a single ingredient or category of ingredients.
- Water, including water with added carbon dioxide and/or flavorings.
- Herbs, spices, and blends thereof.
- Salt and salt substitutes.
- Tabletop sweeteners.
- Coffee and Coffee Products, including whole or ground coffee beans and decaffeinated coffee, as well as certain coffee and chicory extracts.
- Tea, herbal and fruit infusions, provided they meet the conditions set forth in the regulation, in particular provided they contain only authorized flavorings that do not alter their nutritional value.
- Fermented vinegar and vinegar substitutes, including products with added flavorings.
- Aromas.
- Food additives.
- Processing aids.
- Food enzymes.
- Gelatin.
- Products for thickening jams.
- Yeast.
- Chewing gum.
- Food in packages or containers with a maximum surface area of less than 25 cm².
- Food products, including artisanal foods, supplied directly by the producer in small quantities to the final consumer or to local retail establishments that supply them directly to the final consumer.
